Mario Navarro Veiga
PhD student
I am a PhD student since September 2025 with Andrea and Thamarai Schneiders as part of the AI for Biomedical Innovation CDT. We are investigating the way the overexpression of the global transcription factor Ram-A confers antimicrobial resistance to the major pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae. This species is an opportunistic pathogen which typically arises through hospital acquired infections. Some hyper-virulent strains are showing increasing trends of resistance to many antibiotics, include last-line ones.
Before joining the group, I completed a double MSc in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. I completed my thesis as a visiting student at Adrian Bird's lab at the University of Edinburgh. I also completed a BSc in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Edinburgh.
Aside from research, I enjoy playing football, going to the gym, trying out different sports, wildlife photography, and playing video games in my free time.
